Nutrition update

It’s a day off…in the mountains…what are you doing?

And how is it going on the second part of our nutrition challenge?  Favorite recipe’s?  Go to meals?  List your favorites in the comments section so you can share with others.  Part of the difficulty in changing your foods is learning new meals and new spices as well as changing your habits and finding what you like.

Several folks are making great changes during this nutrition challenge.  Porn Star, to name one, has totally changed her shape.  And watching her fight for all of her reps last night in the workout lets us know she is changing her performance too…in a good way.

Persevere for another two and one half weeks with the food and even more changes will occur.  Look around.  Change is everywhere.  Are you part of it?

Enjoy where you live, too.  We live in a magical place.  You probably live here because you made a choice to be here.  Remember why you’re here and where here is.  Don’t let it pass  you by.  Get some, go again.

Finally, our running drills began last night and we had an awesome group.  We are changing our perceptions of how we move.  Sweeeeeeeet!

Get out there!

I’ll start at the bottom and work my way up.

I’m very bummed to not be taking part in the running drills. Boo. But thats the way the (grain and sugar free) cookie bounces sometimes.

Why am I here? Because I love it. Every day that I spend outside, in the sun and wind and rain and snow and trees and blue skies and clouds and fresh air I feel a little more alive, a little more real.

Am I part of the change? Absolutely! In the last 2 months I have found the things I can do that really really make me a happy person and learned which things make me not so happy. Ways to take care of myself (the right foods and sleep mostly!) that mean I wake up with a mental energy to just go DO stuff! All the stuff.

It seems like lately I have hit an amazing spot in my fitness where my strength, mental focus and form are beginning to all come together at the same time. Not every workout and not every movement but many times. I am starting to FEEL the moves and not have to think about them quite so much and have added several new PRs lately as a result!

And as for the nutrition challenge? It’s going pretty darn well. I don’t actually feel like there is an end date to this game at this point. I don’t see me changing the way I am eating in any significant way anytime soon. Perhaps the occasional treat but at this point I no longer really have to think about avoiding the things I’m not eating and have in fact for this second half of the challenge gone one step farther and have gone completely dairy free too. And it’s fine. I like the way I feel, I like how simple food has become, and I like the space to see what is actually in my fridge!
Curry powder and cumin have become 2 of my new go to spices along with garlic and onion powders. Also really appreciating ginger powder and the occasional touch of fennel although I’ve been a bit hesitant to throw it in too many things yet!

This is long so I’m not going to add recipes but my go to snacks these days are a few blueberries for a sweet treat or a half an avocado, some cooked earlier and bagged up bacon, a hardboiled egg or some ‘cracklins’ (which make an awesome substitute for croutons on a salad!

A new food I am enjoying lately is a pork tenderloin. I marinate it in coconut milk with some Indian Mango Spice (from Khristopher’s Culinaire!). Then just pop it in the oven for 30-40 minutes depending on size. The leftovers are great, some even found its way into my eggs this morning.

And Ruth, you are right, it is all really coming together right now for you. I can see it in your form, drive and dedication. As a trainer, it is fun to watch! 🙂

I’ve been more or less eating the same foods for 3 months now. Scrambles in the morning and squash with meat and veggies for lunch and dinner. A banana and nuts and seeds and fresh veggies for snacks. Some more interesting dinners have included shrimp thai curry or a north african inspired stew. Tonight I’m going to try to cook fish, with a mint lemon seasoning. I’m a bit nervous. Like Ruth, I find the eating pretty simple and easy and don’t plan on a change anytime in the future. The challenge has helped me cut back on my alcohol consumption, with the drawback that I have a low tolerance and high hangover potential now. As far as body changes, all I know is that it is all I can do to keep from falling too far behind the amazing athletes I work out with. It is inspirational to witness so much endurance and strength. I have a lot of skill goals to accomplish by the time I go back to firefighting full time this summer, so there is a lot to keep me busy over the next couple months…. Also, I’m really proud of everyone who is treating everyday as a fitness and nutrition “challenge.” Life is awesome!

ps- Natural Grocers has dandelion greens this week! They are a bit bitter raw, as expected, but steamed down quickly when I threw them in my eggs this morning. SOOOOO good. Oh, and keeping a closer eye on my electrolytes this week, because I’ve been getting weird vertigo feelings at the computer this week. Hopefully it is just the evilness of being stuck at a desk. Take care of yourselves.

Yo know faith as an aspiring culinarian. I have to admit that the tenderloin sounds pretty bad ass. And since I am in nutrition class right now these on going comments about peoples diets has piqued my curiosity just a bit. The only gripe that I have about some of this is the gluten free bullshit I see now a-days. I’m gonna leave it at that. But great job y’all and you have no idea how bad it sucks to not be able to work out like I anticipated coming up here. Take care. SMU
